Welcome to the Friends of Castle Park

Bishop's Stortford

The Friends of Castle Park in Bishop’s Stortford are a group of volunteers who dedicate their time to ensuring that Castle Park is a beautiful and interesting place to visit.

Castle Park is in the heart of Bishop’s Stortford and is a great destination for the community to enjoy. A beautifully landscaped park preserve both the heritage and conservation of its green space and the River Stort. Wide paths make the park easily accessible to all.

Waytemore Castle was built by the Normans in around 1080 and you can visit the remains at the top of the mound, which is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.  Community archaeology digs continue to explore the fascinating history of what lies beneath our feet in Castle Park. Find out more here.

The River Stort is a chalk river. These are globally rare with most found in southern and eastern Britain. Clear water flows over a gravel bed which encourages an abundance of different plants to grow which attracts a diverse variety of wildlife.

The Friends of Castle Park are always looking for new members to volunteer for conservation and archaeology activities. Volunteer for an hour or two as you have time, or come along to regular activities, which are generally monthly. Check below for dates of upcoming events.

Please come along to find out more, or contact us to be added to our mailing list.

Green Flag Award

Castle Park was awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award® in 2024. As the international standard for parks and green spaces this recognises and rewards well managed parks and green spaces for all the community to enjoy.

The Castle Park Project

Between 2016 and 2024, a partnership was formed between East Herts Council and Bishop’s Stortford Town Council, supported by the Countryside Management Service, part of Hertfordshire County Council. Funding was secured from the National Lottery Heritage Fund and National Lottery Community Fund to create an improved Castle Park. We would like to thank all those people who play the Lottery. The project included heritage, conservation, biodiversity improvements, new community facilities and greater accessibility for all.
